All Square in the Bathroom
Fresh from the ISH Toilet and Bathroom Convention in Frankfurt, Mark Mulville from Arcon Bathrooms reports that nickel is the new gold, square is the new circle, showers are in and Jacuzzis are out.
Open for just over 5 years, Arcon Bathrooms have one large bathroom showroom in Dublin, with over 50 displays and cater for interior designers, architects and general public.
"We try to specialise in architects and designers as we are owned by a trade company, Arcon Heating & Plumbing, so a lot of our leads are generated by from within the trade," says Mark Mulville.
Through our showroom business we are involved mainly in more upmarket commercial jobs, such as one million Euro houses and apartments, so we specialise in the top end of the market.
A lot of Arcon Bathroom stock is German, but they also stock Roca from Spain, Catalano from Italy and Dansani from Denmark. There are some Irish suppliers, such as in the shower door manufacturing sector. Duravit is a very interior design associated product and it what most designers bring customers into the showroom to view, explains Mulville. It is a very modern range and seems to be what the market is looking for at the moment.
In terms of trends square is the new circle and Mulville find that this year everything is very square oriented, from toilets to baths to basins and even taps. A Second Floor range from Duravit is very square in nature and is considered the cutting edge of what is currently in vogue. For colour white is the new black and in bathrooms the trend continues and Mulville believes that this is because when it comes to appliances it is the only colour in demsn.
At the recent ISH Toilet and Bathroom Convention in Frankfurt, held in March, Mulville reports that a minimalist palette was very much the prominent style, with simple designs and everything square, white and wall hung off the floor.
"If you go to nine out ten bathrooms we have done recently they are all square, white, chrome and walnut, with wall hung appliances," reports Mulville. One area of the bathroom that has seen the most evolution in popularity has been the shower.
Ten years ago there was only one make of shower but it is now German high pressure power showers that have taken over as people are into their showers now and it is what they are spending their money on.
A spin of this has been that wetrooms and saunas have become very popular, while Jacuzzis appear to have fallen out of favour with the industry.

In fittings Arcon Bathrooms also do a traditional style range as they have found that some clients do not want the modern look and live in houses that do not lend themselves to the current trends. Nickel, or polished nickel, is also the new gold as gold is currently out of favour and almost seen as gaudy. Wenge, walnut and olive ash are all emerging trends to watch in relation to furnishings.
